The Japanese archipelago's near-isolation from the wider ocean has created a unique marine environment in the Sea of Japan. This small ocean-like basin, surrounded by landmasses, exhibits swirling currents and weather patterns reminiscent of larger bodies of water. Despite this, knowledge about the dolphins and porpoises that inhabit these coastal waters remains limited. A team at Kyoto University, prompted by reports from local fishers, embarked on a study to uncover more about these marine mammals. The research focused on two bays: Wakasa Bay, near the middle of the archipelago, and Aso Bay, located further south on Tsushima Island. By employing passive acoustic monitoring, the team recorded dolphin sounds, including clicks and whistles, to track their presence and behavior. The findings revealed that dolphins, specifically Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins, appeared in both bays, with a frequency of approximately once every 10 days. The study also noted the timing and characteristics of their whistles, with Wakasa Bay's dolphins favoring rising tones and Aso Bay's dolphins producing flatter, steadier whistles. This research provides a crucial baseline for understanding dolphin behavior and conservation efforts in this unique marine environment. However, the team plans to continue their work, aiming to pair the recordings with more direct observations and track individual dolphins to gain a deeper understanding of their ecology and interactions with the local ecosystem.
